During my recent trips to Japan, I embarked on a new project, capturing a small series of black-and-white photographs titled “Kyoto 2X2”.

This collection of thirty images is built on the concept of diptychs, where each photo is paired with a complementary image, thus creating a dialogue between the two.

The second photo echoes one or more elements of the first photo, forming a subtle visual connection. Sometimes, this connection is obvious, while other times it requires a deeper look to uncover.

In Kyoto 2X2, the primary image may appear in either the first or second position within the pair, encouraging viewers to engage with the photos in their own personal way.

By omitting descriptions and captions, the series further invites observers to consider the content of the images, and the relationships between them, by discovering one’s own narratives through individual interpretation.

The juxtaposition of single moments in time allows viewers to contemplate the fleeting essence of the world. And the minimalist aesthetic of B&W photography is intended to add to this concept by emphasizing the characteristics of form, texture, light, and contrast.

You can see more detail in each pair of photos by clicking or tapping on any of them to enlarge them on your screen.
