Recently I wrote some posts with tips on being a successful photographer part 1<\/a> and part 2<\/a> and I also wrote an article about how to get into the right frame of mind<\/a> for photography. But I think there are 5 really easy and important points that you can utilize daily to help yourself become a better photographer.<\/p>\n

Part of the challenge in maintaining success though is that we humans, as time goes on, become complacent. Especially if we have reached some level of success already as it is hard to remain hungry for knowledge if you feel you have come quite far in your skill set already. Plus we may forget to apply some of the very basics of photography that we applied in the past which helped us reach our current level of success to begin with. So let’s now go back in time, get back to basics, and discuss some of the things that are so important as photographers to continue to apply to our work on a daily basis: <\/p>\n

1 – Never Stop Learning<\/strong> – I think in photography an old dog can learn new tricks. What I mean by this is if you think about when you first became a photographer all you did was learn photographic techniques. So go back to learning. Do what you did when you first started in photography. Keep hunting down methods, adding to your skill set and you will continue to grow in photography in new and different ways from where you are now.<\/p>\n

2 – Embrace New Technology<\/strong> – One way to take your work to new levels is to add some new technology to your workflow and embrace the changes being made in photography instead of just trying to stick with what you consider “the old school” way of doing things. Unfortunately there is often a cost involved in adding new technology to your workflow. But if photography is your career, or even just a serious hobby, then reinvesting in your equipment with newer technology can often enable you to shoot in more advanced ways, and with better diversity than you were able to before. <\/p>\n

3 – Keep Up With The Latest Techniques<\/strong> – I think to stay on top of your game you need to keep yourself abreast of new techniques that others are using in the field. And, if you find them useful, then add them to your workflow too. Just because you have been using techniques that are tried and proven it doesn’t mean that as time goes on that better ways of doing the same thing wont evolve and develop. So keep reading articles about new techniques and following new ideas that people have. There is such a wealth of information on the internet and, the more you read about new techniques, then the better your pictures will become as a result.<\/p>\n

4 – Study What People Are Shooting<\/strong> – I always dedicate a portion of my time to seeing what other photographers are shooting. I try to go to exhibitions, skim through pictures in the latest photography books, and I regularly check out other portfolios on the internet. It is so important to see other people’s work for your own inspiration and to help you see and imagine the world photographically in new ways.<\/p>\n

5 – Share Ideas With Others<\/strong> – Another great way to gather new ideas, techniques, and ways of doing things is to share ideas with other photographer friends. By sharing what you know, and they sharing what they know with you, new ideas can evolve and trigger new methods of doing things to improve your results.<\/p>\n
