The photo fair is now happening this year in Bangkok Thailand from November 27th through December 1st at BITEC exhibition center in Bang Na. They have a web site here, but it is all in Thai and doesn’t really give much info that I can see. A short mention of it is also on the BITEC web site here under upcoming events.
I went today and I found it was easier to get there than I expected. I took the BTS Sky Train to Bang Na station and then walked from there. Once you get to the BITEC Complex, if you come from the sky train station, you will enter from the side of the complex and then there is a bit of a long walk on an elevated, enclosed sky bridge to get into the BITEC exhibition building itself. The walk is fine though because the bridge is all enclosed and air-conditioned.
Another option is to drive there if you have a car, but I heard parking is not so easy at times at BITEC. You can also take a taxi to get there and pull right up to the entrance. Then there is no walking really. But the BTS was fast and easy and no traffic or parking to deal with like when taking a taxi or driving yourself.
Once you reach the BITEC building, if you come in from the sky bridge, you will go down an escalator and walk a bit further before reaching the fair hall itself. The first thing you come upon before reaching the fair hall is a nice photo exhibition of travel type photos put on by the Photo Business Association of Thailand. There is a wide variety of subjects and it is worth checking it out. A few memorable shots for sure.
The photo fair itself is better than I expected. A good mix of professional and consumer level stuff. Both Nikon and Canon have big booths with platforms above them which you can climb up on and where you can play with long range zoom lenses which are fixed onto camera bodies.
Other than that, lots of equipment and booths selling all kinds of small camera accessories, bags, lighting, tripods, stands, lens mount adapters, and everything else.
The coolest thing I saw were the remote controlled helicopters at the Nikon booth which are for aerial DSLR photography.
You might also find other interesting stuff there. I didn’t get a chance to look at everything, but there is a lot to see.
Also, if you have never been there to BITEC, there is a large food court on the underground floor. Lots of variety of good food once you get tired and hungry from walking around. The food in the food court is very reasonably priced and entrance to the photo fair is free. They just require you to fill in your name and email address on a registration form and then you are given a sticker to stick on your shirt to enter the fair.
Enjoy!
