When I was in Kyoto recently I did some photo shooting with my iPhone. The objective was to capture candid shots within the focal length and depth of field limitations of a smartphone camera. However, the speed of shooting with an iPhone also offers an advantage when capturing a quickly fleeting moment.
I was aiming for B&W compositions that show some abstract textures, contrast, shadows, reflections, shapes, architecture, and some street spontaneity. Following are 25 of the images from Kyoto. They are all rendered using the iPhone’s native 3:4 vertical aspect ratio and were shot in the Apple ProRaw format for maximum dynamic range. No retouching was done on any of these. Just a bit of dodging and burning in Camera Raw. I also added a light blue sepia tone to all of them in post.
I hope they offer a feel for some of the subjects which caught my eye and that you enjoy them as much as I do. You can also see more detail by enlarging them on a computer to full screen by clicking on any of them.
